Full nutritional transparency for every food product.
Food Scanner provides a complete nutritional breakdown of any packaged food product. Scan the barcode and instantly see macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates, fats), micronutrients (vitamins, minerals), caloric density, fiber content, and sodium levels — all presented in clear, visual charts that make it easy to evaluate what you're eating at a glance.
The app's additive database covers 304 food additives commonly found in packaged foods. Each additive is classified by function (preservative, colorant, emulsifier, flavor enhancer) and assigned a safety rating based on evaluations from the European Food Safety Authority and independent research. Color-coded indicators instantly tell you whether an ingredient is safe, questionable, or potentially harmful.
Food Scanner's scoring algorithm goes beyond simple calorie counting. It evaluates the overall nutritional balance of a product — rewarding high protein and fiber content while penalizing excessive sugar, saturated fat, and sodium. The NOVA processing classification adds another dimension, helping you distinguish between whole foods, processed foods, and ultra-processed products that may carry additional health risks regardless of their nutrient profile.
Create a personal health profile to receive customized analysis. Whether you're managing cholesterol, tracking sodium for blood pressure, or focused on high-protein eating, Food Scanner adjusts its scoring and highlights to match your specific nutritional goals. The food comparator lets you evaluate two products head-to-head, making it simple to choose the healthier option on the shelf.
Full breakdown of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, fiber, vitamins, and minerals with visual charts showing how a product fits into recommended daily intake values.
Every food additive is catalogued with its E-number, function, safety classification, and regulatory status. Instant identification of preservatives, colorants, and emulsifiers.
Place two food products side by side and compare their nutritional profiles, additive counts, processing levels, and overall health grades to make smarter choices.
Set your dietary goals — low sodium, high protein, low sugar, or custom targets — and receive personalized scoring that highlights what matters most to you.
Quick-glance widget on your iPhone home screen shows your last scanned product's grade and key nutritional highlights without opening the app.
Interactive visual charts break down energy distribution, nutrient density, and daily value percentages in a format that's easy to understand and share.
Use your iPhone camera to scan the barcode on any packaged food product. All standard barcode formats are supported for instant recognition.
The app retrieves the product's complete data — full ingredient list, nutrition table per 100g and per serving, and allergen information — from the Open Food Facts database.
Every ingredient is checked against our additive database to identify E-numbers, classify their risk level, and flag any ingredients that may require attention.
A comprehensive algorithm weighs nutritional balance, additive safety, and processing level to produce a single letter grade from A (excellent) to E (poor).
Food Scanner is powered by Open Food Facts, a free, open, and collaborative database of food products from around the world. With millions of entries contributed and verified by a global community, Open Food Facts provides detailed ingredient lists, nutrition facts, allergen declarations, labels, and product photographs for foods sold in over 150 countries.
The additive safety classifications in our 304-entry database are derived from official evaluations by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and published meta-analyses in peer-reviewed nutrition journals. These classifications are reviewed periodically to reflect the latest scientific consensus.
How Food Scanner calculates grades
Excellent — Nutrient-dense, minimal additives, low processing. Whole or minimally processed foods with strong nutritional profiles.
Good — Solid nutritional balance with minor processing or a small number of low-risk additives. A healthy everyday choice.
Fair — Moderate nutritional value. May contain elevated sugar, saturated fat, or several additives. Fine in moderation.
Poor — Nutritional imbalances present. High in sugar, sodium, or saturated fat, with multiple additives. Consume occasionally.
Avoid — Ultra-processed with poor nutritional profile. High risk additives, excessive sugar or sodium. Seek healthier alternatives.
The Food Scanner grade is computed from a weighted formula that evaluates nutritional balance (protein, fiber, sugar, saturated fat, sodium as percentages of daily values), the number and severity of additives present, and the NOVA ultra-processing classification. Products rich in protein and fiber receive bonuses, while excessive sugar, sodium, and harmful additives incur penalties.
