What It Does

Baby & Kids is designed to help parents navigate the overwhelming world of packaged foods, snacks, and baby products by detecting ingredients that may be unsafe or inappropriate for young children. The app recognizes that children at different developmental stages have vastly different nutritional needs and sensitivities, so it provides age-specific analysis across four key groups: 0–6 months, 6–12 months, 1–3 years, and 3+ years. Simply set your child's age group, scan a product barcode, and receive an instant safety assessment tailored to their specific stage of development.

At the heart of the app is a carefully curated database of over 120 ingredients that have been flagged as potentially harmful for young children. This includes artificial sweeteners like aspartame and acesulfame-K, certain preservatives such as sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate, high-sodium compounds that can strain developing kidneys, and textures or consistencies that present choking risks for infants and toddlers. Each ingredient is classified with age-specific risk levels — an additive that may be acceptable for a three-year-old could be completely inappropriate for a six-month-old baby.

The age-specific analysis engine adjusts all warnings and recommendations based on the developmental stage you have selected. For infants under six months, the app applies the strictest criteria, flagging anything beyond breast milk or approved formula ingredients. For toddlers aged one to three, the analysis shifts to focus on excessive sugar, salt, artificial colors linked to hyperactivity, and common allergens that should be introduced carefully. For children over three, the app provides a balanced assessment that highlights concerning additives while acknowledging a broader range of acceptable ingredients.

Baby & Kids empowers parents to make confident, informed decisions at the supermarket, whether they are choosing a baby formula, evaluating a toddler snack, or checking the ingredients of a children's yogurt. The app provides clear, color-coded results that are easy to understand even when you are shopping with a restless child in tow. All analysis is performed locally on your device, ensuring your family's data stays private and secure.

Key Features

👶

Age-Group Analysis

Set your child's age group — 0–6 months, 6–12 months, 1–3 years, or 3+ years — and receive safety assessments specifically calibrated to their developmental stage and dietary needs.

⚠️

120+ Unsafe Ingredients

A comprehensive database of over 120 ingredients flagged as potentially harmful for children, including artificial sweeteners, preservatives, high-sodium compounds, and choking-risk textures.

🍼

Baby Product Scanner

Specialized scanning mode for baby-specific products like formulas, cereals, and purees. Detects ingredients that should never appear in infant food and flags regulatory non-compliance.

📊

Safety Score

Each product receives a clear safety score from A to E based on the presence and severity of age-inappropriate ingredients, giving you an instant overview of suitability for your child.

How It Works

1

Set Child's Age Group

Select your child's developmental stage from four age groups. The app adjusts all safety thresholds and ingredient warnings to match their specific needs.

2

Scan Product Barcode

Point your camera at the barcode on any food product, baby formula, snack, or children's item. The scanner supports all standard barcode formats.

3

Analyze 120+ Ingredients

The app cross-references every ingredient against the database of 120+ substances flagged as potentially harmful for young children, applying age-specific risk criteria.

4

Get Safety Grade

Receive an age-appropriate safety grade from A to E, along with a detailed breakdown of any flagged ingredients and recommendations for your child's age group.

Data Source

Baby & Kids uses an internal scientific database built from pediatric nutrition research and food safety authorities worldwide. The ingredient risk classifications are based on guidelines from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations on infant and young child feeding. Each of the 120+ flagged ingredients has been individually reviewed against published pediatric safety studies.

The age-specific thresholds are derived from developmental nutrition science, taking into account the maturation of organ systems — particularly the kidneys, liver, and digestive tract — at different stages of childhood. Our team regularly reviews new research publications and regulatory updates to ensure the database reflects the most current understanding of pediatric food safety.

Grade System

How Baby & Kids calculates safety grades

A

Excellent — No age-inappropriate ingredients detected. Fully suitable for the selected age group with safe nutritional composition.

B

Good — Minor concerns identified. May contain low-risk additives or slightly elevated sodium/sugar levels for the age group.

C

Moderate — Contains some ingredients that are not ideal for the selected age group. Review flagged items before feeding to your child.

D

Poor — Multiple age-inappropriate ingredients found. Contains additives, allergens, or nutritional levels that may pose risks for young children.

E

Avoid — Contains ingredients that are unsafe or strongly discouraged for the selected age group. Seek safer alternatives.

Grades are calculated based on the presence and quantity of age-inappropriate ingredients, allergen risk levels, additive safety classifications for children, and overall nutritional suitability for the selected developmental stage. The algorithm weighs each factor according to its potential impact on child health, with the strictest criteria applied to the youngest age groups.
